Every moment that we are in this world we are subject to various uncertainties, except the one fact that things generally do not stay the same. At times, change is a quiet softening exhale. At others, it is abrupt, callous, and leaves us grasping in the dark for anything familiar. We usually do not know how or when change will happen, only that it inevitably will.
I want to express deep gratitude to all who submitted to this show. I was drawn to pieces that not only represented transformations occurring or having occurred but also left the door open for new contexts to materialize. The way change is felt through the work manifests in so many different ways: bodies redefined through circumstance and will, time giving and taking, language playing tricks, geologies shifting and cracking. Evidenced by the varied interpretations of the theme, our selves, relations, environs, and histories are all unfixed, subject to the strangeness of becoming something new. It is as exciting as it is unsettling. - Cort Hartle
