Kari Varner with Light Work

we’ve been so impressed with what our midwest nice artists have been up to this year! we’re sharing the amazing accomplishments within our community.

We’re excited to share work by Kari Varner @karivarner✨ Kari has been killing it! She recently received a Light Work Grant @lightworkorg and is an artist in residence at Millay Arts @millayarts . Her Light Work Grant includes an exhibition alongside the other grantees on view from May 31st to August 16th, 2024. Kari’s work was exhibited in our midwest salon exhibition.

"The Light Work Grant will support an ongoing body of work exploring the traces of industry and human's presence upon the landscape while utilizing native and invasive plant species as film and paper developer. I will continue to expand this work while also producing a catalog of plants (native and non) growing in the region that can be used for anthotypes, cyanotype toning and development.

Alongside this work, the funds will allow me to pursue a planned project that traces the reverberations of the Erie canal as it continues to shepherd plants and animal species along an artificially opened vein from the Atlantic to Lake Erie."  — Kari Varner
